From Finale to a checked editable score

The preview is an import test, not proof of perfect fidelity. Complete these steps before treating the converted document as a new source of truth.

    Export or batch-archive the Finale project

    For one document choose File → Export → MusicXML. In Finale v25–v27, File → Export → Translate Folder to MusicXML can create interchange copies for a project archive. Finale 2014.5 and later have built-in MusicXML export; earlier versions require the legacy Dolet plug-in.

    Open each exported score locally

    Choose an exported .mxl, .musicxml, or .xml file below. The browser performs the format import, preview, and playback without sending the project to an AI conversion endpoint.

    Audit Finale-specific engraving

    Verify linked parts, staff styles, expressions, smart shapes, percussion maps, cross-staff notation, fonts, and optimized systems. Save corrections in the editable copy without discarding the archival source.

First confirm musical meaning, then inspect application-specific engraving and playback. A clean preview can still need deliberate editorial correction.

Questions before you convert

Can this page rescue a .musx file without Finale?

No. It needs a MusicXML export made by Finale or another trusted application that can legally open the project. This page does not claim to reverse-engineer Finale project files.

Can I convert a folder of Finale projects?

Finale v25–v27 provides Translate Folder to MusicXML for batch export. Archive both the native projects and their MusicXML copies, then review representative files before assuming the batch is complete.

What should I preserve before moving away from Finale?

Keep the original project, exported MusicXML, reference PDFs, required fonts, and audio references. MusicXML is the editable interchange layer; the PDF is a useful visual ground truth.
