From MuseScore to a checked editable score

The preview is an import test, not proof of perfect fidelity. Complete these steps before treating the converted document as a new source of truth.

    Export the full score from MuseScore

    In MuseScore Studio choose File → Export, select MusicXML, and include the score or the parts you actually need. Compressed MusicXML keeps the transfer compact; uncompressed MusicXML is easier to inspect as text.

    Choose the resulting .mxl, .musicxml, or .xml file below. NotationAI uses the same browser score engine as the editor to normalize, engrave, and play the file without a Token-consuming service.

    Continue with a verified editable copy

    Compare instruments, transpositions, manual system breaks, text placement, and custom symbols with MuseScore. Then open the normalized score in the editor and keep the MuseScore project as the source backup.

What fidelity really means for this route

First confirm musical meaning, then inspect application-specific engraving and playback. A clean preview can still need deliberate editorial correction.

  • Staff and instrument structure, clefs, keys, meters, and written transpositions
  • Many manual breaks and layout hints when they are included in the MusicXML export

  • Percussion mappings, tablature details, courtesy notation, and cross-staff beaming
  • Page geometry and spacing because NotationAI applies its own engraving rules

  • Muse Sounds, mixer effects, synthesizer settings, and playback-only sound flags
  • MuseScore plugins, workspace settings, revision history, and project comments
  • A pixel-identical copy of MuseScore pagination or application-specific engraving

Questions before you convert

Can NotationAI open an .mscz file directly?

No. Open the project in MuseScore Studio and export MusicXML or MXL first. The upload control deliberately rejects native MuseScore project files instead of making a misleading conversion promise.

Should I export MXL or uncompressed MusicXML?

Both work. MXL is smaller and can package related assets; uncompressed MusicXML is easier to inspect and diagnose. Use the format that fits your handoff, then verify the same musical checklist.

Why can the result look different from MuseScore?

MusicXML carries musical semantics and many layout hints, but it does not transfer MuseScore’s complete engraving engine, fonts, playback library, or every application-specific property.
